Award winning German cameraman Gerhard Schulz has been named Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2003 for his picture of a boy staring through a window at a lowland gorilla in an American zoo. Schulz, based in Hamburg, has been photographing wildlife since being inspired while on a visit to Kenya in 1987.
The picture was taken by Schulz on a visit to Miami Metrozoo in Florida -- a departure from his more usual haunts in the Everglades National Park where he has spent the past five years photographing ospreys. It was chosen from some 20,500 images entered from more than 60 countries for the competition which has been in its current format for two decades. Last year's winner was Angie Scott from Kenya.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the world's biggest wildlife photographic competition, jointly organised by London's Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine.
